A few words from the creator:
Most clarinetists are familiar with these etudes, as some or all of them appear in various method
and etude books. I studied these as a kid, and have played and taught them all for decades
I would often play them alongside my students, inventing a “2nd clarinet” part a 3rd or a 6th
above or below to show where the harmonies change. In just about every case, the students’
interpretation and phrasing was made easier when he/she could hear the harmonic sequences.
I thought, “Hey, this sounds pretty good, maybe I should write some of this down.” Well, after
many years, I finally have. The 20 etudes presented here as duets are the result. They represent
some of my favorites from the myriad of intermediate level etudes.
Players will find that although some simple parallel 3rds and 6ths are inevitable, the new parts
are far from just accompaniments. There is melody, counterpoint, imitation, some very
challenging technical passages (the “2nd” part more difficult than the original), an occasional
blast at 20th C. harmonies, and just for fun, some quotes from other works.
These are short enough to be performed for a recital, jury, or chamber music festival with
interesting and challenging parts for both players. In many cases, the “2nd” clarinet part even
works as a stand-alone etude. I believe these duets fill an important gap in the existing clarinet
pedagogical repertoire (particularly if you’re as bored with the Rubank “Yellow” and “Orange”
duet books as I am!).

“Melodious and Progressive Studies” from Southern Music as stated below; materials have been
revised to create this edition:

Baermann: #4, 5, 6, 7, 14, 15, 16
